The first active volcano observed outside the Earth was discovered in 1979 on Io, one of the moons of Jupiter.  The volcano 2.00 x 105 m.  Given that the acceleration of gravity on Io is 1.80 m/s2, find the initial velocity of the ejected material.

We know from the relation
v2 - u2 = 2aS
Here,v = 0,a = 1.80 m/s2 and S = 2.00 * 105 m
or - u2 = 2aS
or - u = (2aS)1/2
or u = -(2aS)1/2 = - (2 * 1.80 * 2.00 * 105)1/2
or u = - 848 m/s
The negative sign indicates that the velocity of the ejected material is opposite to the direction of the acceleration due to gravity.
