Question Details:

In the cross (or vector) product  F = V x B we know that

F= -3i - 37j + 16k
V=  -5i + 3j + 6k
B= Bxi + Bxj + Bzk

In  B the x and y components have the same value, represented by Bx. What is the value of Bz?

Response Details:
F = V x B = i(3Bz-6Bx) + j(6Bx+5Bz) + k(-5Bx-3Bx) = -3i -37j + 16k

from the k component, -5Bx - 3Bx = 16
                                  -8Bx = 16
                                     Bx = -2

from the i component, 3Bz - 6Bx = -3           (substitute Bx = -2)
                                3Bz + 12 = -3
                                       3Bz = -15
                                         Bz = -5

∴ Bz = -5
