Given quantites: α=23 x 10-6C-1, Li=2.725cm =0.02725m, ΔT=Tf-Ti=1000C-00C=1000C, ΔL=?

Use the formula for average coefficient of linear expansion:

where d0=initial diameter=0.02725m, Δd=6.2675 x 10-5m...

Response Details:
The change in diameter of the hole depends on the temperature change, the initial length and a constant  of expansion of the material. This is represented by:
               ΔL  = α L0 ΔT
                       = (23x10-6/C )( 2.725)(100C - 0C)
                       = 0.00627 cm
The new diameter is:
               d = d0 + Δd
                  = 2.725 cm + 0.00627 cm = 2.731 cm is th e diameter of the hole at 100 C .
