Question Details:
Physics: 4th Edition, Volume 1 by Resnick/ Halliday/ Krane
 
Question #16 pg. 30:
 
16). A particle had a velocity of 18 m/s in the +x direction and 2.4 seconds later its velocity was 30 m/s in the opposite direction. What was the average acceleration of the particle during this 2.4 second interval?

Average acceleration is defined as the change in velocity over the change in time:


So...

The change in velocity is going to be final velocity minus the initial velocity:


 

The change in time is just time period this action takes place in.


So the average acceleration will be:

So our final answer is -20 meters per second squared during this 2.4 second period.

Average Acceleration = ΔVelocity / ΔTime

ΔVelocity = (Vfinal - Vstart) = (-30m/s - (18 m/s)) =-48 m/s
ΔTime = (2.4s)

Average Acceleration = -20 m/s2
