electric field
Course Textbook Chapter Problem
N/A N/A N/A N/A
Question Details:
A researcher studying the properties of ions in the upper atmosphere wishes to construct an apparatus with the following characteristics:  Using an electric field, a beam of ions, each having charge Q, mass m, and initial velocity v, is turned through an angle of 90 degrees as each ion undergoes a displacement of .  The ions enter a chamber as shown in the figure and leave through the exit port at the same speed they had when they entered the chamber.  The electric field acting on the ions is to have constant magnitude.

a. Suppose the electric field is produced by two concentric electrodes not shown in the figure and hence is radial.  What magnitude should the field have?

b. Now suppose the field is produced by two flat plates and is uniform in direction.  What value should the field have in this case?

Response:
a.The electric field is
E = v * B
Here,v = v and B = (μoi/2πR),where i is the current that flows when the beam of ions is travelling.
b.When the field is produced by two flat plates and is uniform in direction,then
E = (1/4πεo) * (Q/R2)
Here,εo = 8.85 * 10-12C2/N-m2
