DEtermining the electric field and electric force
Course Textbook Chapter Problem
General Physics N/A N/A N/A
Question Details:
Two 2.00 µC charged particles are located on the x axis. One is at x = 1.00 m, and the other is at x = -1.00 m.
(a) Determine the electric field on the y axis at y = 0.300 m.
N/C i + N/C j

(b) Calculate the electric force on a -3.00 µC charge placed on the y axis at y = 0.300 m.
N i + N j

Response:
a) By symmetry, Ex = 0
Ey = 2KQ y/(x2 + y2)3/2 = 2*9*109*2.00*10-6*0.300/(1+0.09)3/2 = 9.49*103 N/C
b) F = qE
Fx = 0, Fy = -3.00*106*9.49*103 = -0.0285 N

Response:
E = kq/r2
Ei = (8.988 x 109 Nm2/C2)(2.00 x 10-6 C)/(1.00 m)2
Ei = 17976 N/C
Ej = (8.988 x 109 Nm2/C2)(2.00 x 10-6 C)/(0.300 m)2
Ej = 199733 N/C
