hiiiiiiiii frnd,

piracy has been around since the early days of computers in the 70s and 80s yet software companies still make a very good living from selling even the most pirated products like microsoft windows, microsoft office, adobe photoshop etc etc.

however with the emergence of filesharing and broadband and an ever increasing popularity of the internet in general, software developers have had to step up their game in terms of trying to combat piracy using ever more elaborate product activation schemes. unfortunately though, these are normally reverse engineered sooner or later and copies of virtually any software you could name is freely available with some way to bypass the need for a legally obtained product key.

in short, piracy is as prevalent as ever but the it industry still thrives regardless - were piracy to emerge from the 'underground' without being tackled by law enforcement and copyright holders this might change but i can't see that happening anytime soon.

@grog:
really? his worth was well into the billions last i heard - $58 billion in 2008 give or take a couple of billion - *and* microsoft's products are the most pirated in the world.

unless his recent mission to give it all away has been successful he is still a billionaire:
