Mercury at room temperature
Course Textbook Chapter Problem
General Chemistry Introductory Chemistry Concepts & Connections 5th Edition, ISBN: 9780132321488 3 10
Question Details:
If mercury is a liquid at room temperature what three solid elements that would float when place in mercury and what three would sink when placed in mercury.

Nettie's Answer:  Since the early 60s & 70s, they used mercury to detect fevers on a thermonmeter.  As I recall, mercury was suspended in some type of liquid.  So, I woud think that water floats, helium and hydrogen would float, and therefore, zinc, iron gold would sink.  Is this correct? Thank you, Sincerely, Jeannette

Just search for a density table,
Gold, Tungsten, and Plutonium will sink (higher density then mercury).
Find things with a lower density then mercury and they will float, make sure they are solids.
Nettie's Comment:
Thank you for information on the table and description. Have a nice day & week, Sincerely, Jeannette
