Consider f(x) = x+2    and g(x) = √x.   f(g(x)) = √x  + 2    g(f(x)) = √(x+2).  These are not equal, hence fog is not the same as gof

Some functions need to be restricted to be one-to-one so f--1 can exists. 
For example tan-1(tan(3pi/4))   = -
π/4  not 3π/4, because tan-1(x) has a range of -π/2 to π/2
